Translation internship: Welcoming German MA student, Theresa
We are delighted to welcome our latest German intern, Theresa Berns from Haselünne. Theresa will be with AJT right through the summer until early October, before returning to Germany to complete the second year of an MA in Translation at the Johannes Gutenberg University of Mainz in Germersheim.
Ever since primary school, Theresa has been fascinated by foreign languages and cultures. After secondary school, she decided to up sticks and spend some time abroad, heading to the USA to work as au pair for two years and immersing herself completely in the English language and a foreign culture.
Returning to Germany, and after completing a two-year business course training as a state-certified multilingual secretary, Theresa found herself working as a customer services representative in an international food services company. In this role, she was often asked to translate brochures and marketing material and it was here that her interest in a translation career was first piqued.
Next came the language studies: the MA in Translation Studies, which she is thoroughly enjoying, following hot on the heels of a BA in Linguistics, Cultural and Translation Studies. Now Theresa’s keen to put all the theory into practice, gaining hands-on experience of real-life translation and an insight into the everyday workings of a translation company, while at the same time learning more about the British culture and way of life.
In addition to her language skills, Theresa brings a business background to AJT, and her cool, calm and collected persona lends itself really well to translation. She’s slotted neatly into our lovely German in-house team and we hope she’s enjoying being here just as much as we’re enjoying having her with us.
As for her free time, Theresa loves hiking. And walking. And the beach. And dogs. Well, we can safely say she’s come to the right place – there’s nowhere better for all of that than Cornwall!
